Kylian Mbappé, fresh off his high-profile move from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid, is making headlines again with a significant investment in French football.

The 25-year-old superstar is poised to become the majority shareholder of Ligue 2 club SM Caen, marking a new chapter in his growing portfolio.

According to reports from Ouest France and MD, Mbappé is set to invest just under €20 million to acquire an 80% stake in SM Caen from the American investment group Oaktree.

This investment will not only give Mbappé a controlling interest in the club but will also help address the financial challenges Caen has been facing by absorbing some of its existing debt.

Pierre Antoine Capton, the current administrative president, will retain a 20% stake in the club, while Ziad Hammoud, head of Mbappé’s brand image team, is expected to be appointed as the new president.

Mbappé’s mother, Fayza Lamari, who was involved in an earlier negotiation for Mbappé to join Caen before his move to AS Monaco, is also a key figure in this new venture.

Mbappé’s move into club ownership is reminiscent of David Beckham’s transition from player to owner.

While he may not be directly involved in the day-to-day operations of SM Caen, Mbappé’s investment represents a significant shift in the landscape of football club ownership.

His involvement underscores the growing trend of elite players stepping into roles that extend beyond their playing careers.

This investment highlights the stark contrast between the elite echelons of football, where players like Mbappé operate, and the more modest tiers of the sport.

As Mbappe looks into his Real Madrid future, it will be interesting to see how his presence and financial support impact SM Caen and the broader landscape of French football.
