The solitary goal came from Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah, who scored just before the half-time break to secure a 1-0 victory over Fulham.

The win sees Liverpool move to fifth place on the table, six points behind Newcastle in third and four points behind Manchester United in fourth, although the Magpies have played a game less than the Reds, and the men from Manchester have played two games less.

How it happened

Liverpool recorded their fifth consecutive win in the Premier League as they try to salvage what is left of a dour season, and they had Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold to thank after the pair put in superb performances to see off Fulham.

The Reds started brighter than their opponents, going close to taking the lead when Trent’s early effort narrowly missed the far post in the opening moments.

They continued to dominate proceedings in the opening 45 minutes and should have taken the lead when Salah was played through on goal by Alexander-Arnold, but failed to hit the target from the clear-cut chance.

He soon atoned for that miss when Darwin Nunez was controversially adjudged to have been fouled by Fulham defender Issa Diop in the 18-yard-box and Liverpool were awarded a penalty.

Salah stepped up to dispatch the resulting spot-kick to score his 18th goal in the 2022/23 Premier League season.

After the first-half break, Liverpool continued to dominate possession, but struggled to create more clear-cut chances and almost paid the price for their pointless possession when Carlos Vinicius and Joao Palhinha came close to stealing a point for Fulham late on.

On both occasions, they were rescued by Alisson Becker who ensured that the Anfield crowd got to celebrate three points gained.
