Reds legend Ian Rush has predicted the winners of this season's UEFA Champions League to the annoyance of Liverpool fans

Liverpool’s highest goalscorer ever, Ian Rush, has tipped the club’s Premier League rivals to win the UEFA Champions League in the Reds’ absence.

Ian Rush backs Premier League giants in UCL title race

Rush is revered in Liverpool after scoring 346 goals in 660 games for the Reds, winning the European Cup twice and the Premier League on five occasions.

Despite his fame on Merseyside, Rush would have made some enemies after his latest declaration, where he pitched his tent with Liverpool’s fierce rivals as the favourites for this season’s UCL title.

The former Liverpool and Juventus striker was speaking after the recent UCL group stage draw, which did not contain the Reds, who dropped to the Europa League places this year after finishing outside the top four in the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Manchester City tipped to win UCL by Liverpool great

Rush, who was Liverpool’s top scorer in eight separate seasons, backed Manchester City to win the UCL and was quoted by Gazzetta dello Sport as saying, “I think Manchester City are still the favourite. They are the defending champions, they’ve brought reinforcements and are surely the strongest.”

Manchester City and Liverpool have been at loggerheads in the Premier League in recent seasons, forming a new-age rivalry with the Merseysiders, and Rush’s comments are certain to ruffle some feathers.
