Liverpool are reportedly at the front of the queue to sign Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount who has just 16 months left on his existing deal.
Mason Mount is yet to agree a new deal with Chelsea and contract talks were recently placed on hold until the end of the season, opening the door to a potential exit.
Mount could leave Chelsea amid contract issues
Chelsea and Mason Mount are yet to find a resolution to his long-term future at the club. There was a report in The Telegraph, indicating that the Chelsea hierarchy are slowly coming to terms with the fact that he might be sold in the summer.
Now a further report in the Evening Standard has claimed Liverpool are now frontrunners for his signature.
Mount has a deal at Chelsea until the summer of 2024 and talks to extend that deal have stalled. The disagreement is centered around his preferred wage package with the midfielder asking for a figure in excess of £250,000 a week and Chelsea not willing to go that high.
The report also claims the player is not convinced by the idea of a seven-year contract which could severely limit his power to renegotiate in the future.
Mount has been an integral part of the Chelsea squad in recent years, most notably on their run to a Champions League win in 2021 under Thomas Tuchel.
Liverpool keen on Mount
Liverpool are believed to be targeting a summer rebuild and the midfield is a priority area for Jurgen Klopp. Mason Mount will add bite and energy to a midfield severely lacking in both areas.
Mount's desire to feel valued could be something for Klopp and Liverpool to use to their advantage as the player will command a starting place, should a move happen.
Depending on his wage demands, this might also prove to be a difficult deal for Liverpool to pull off but it promises to be an intriguing saga.
