Inter Miami coach Gerardo Martino is keen on winning the MLS title following the heavy investment made to the squad by the acquisition of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Co.

When Tata Martino, head coach of Inter Miami, declared that his team has a “clear obligation” to win the MLS Cup this year, it’s was not just a coach talking up his squad—it’s a signal of the immense pressure and expectations surrounding the team.

Martino’s comments on Wednesday were as candid as they were revealing. With the addition of high-profile players like Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, Inter Miami’s pursuit of the MLS Cup has taken on an almost mythic quality. The pressure isn’t merely about winning; it’s about fulfilling an expectation that’s been set as high as the stars themselves.

“The fact that we have them in this team obviously creates a clear obligation for us to win,” Martino told ESPN. “I have never seen teams in the MLS in the time I have been here that have any kind of pressure to win. I have rarely seen teams that are forced to win. I had never seen it, but I do with Inter Miami.”

Martino, who led Atlanta United FC to an MLS championship in 2018, acknowledged that the stakes with Inter Miami are unlike anything he’s encountered before.

Despite securing the Leagues Cup last season, the Herons fell short of the MLS playoffs, a reminder of the fine line between success and failure in football.

This season, however, Inter Miami have turned a corner. Boasting the best record in MLS, topping the Eastern Conference, and setting several team records—including most points (56) and goals (58)—they are poised for a strong playoff run.

The squad’s formidable lineup has undoubtedly fueled high expectations, turning them into the “great candidate” for the league title, as Martino noted.

Yet, even with a team brimming with talent, Inter Miami faces the challenge of delivering on their promise.

Messi’s recent injury has been a significant concern, but he has resumed training and is expected to make a return during the regular season, much to the relief of fans and teammates alike.

As the playoffs approach, the pressure intensifies, particularly for Suarez, whose contract is set to expire at the end of the season. For him, the 2024 playoffs could be his last shot at securing an MLS title with Inter Miami.

Martino’s reflections emphasises the unique blend of expectation and opportunity that comes with managing a team of Inter Miami’s calibre.

The pressure to win is undeniable, but so too is the excitement of potentially achieving something truly historic.
