Terem Moffi continued his good form in Ligue 1 with a goal and assist against Moses Simon's Nantes
Two Super Eagles stars came head-to-head- as Moses Simon's Nantes hosted Terem Moffi's Nice in Ligue 1
Terem Moffi gave a man-of-the-match performance, but Moses barely had any impact in the game as the sides played out an entertaining 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon.
Moffi opened the scoring for Nice and also assisted Youssouf Ndayishimiye's goal that put them 2-1 up, but ultimately, he and Nice had to settle for a draw as Mostafa Mohamed scored Nantes' equaliser two minutes from full time.
How it happened
Coming into the fixture, Nice had the chance to close the gap on Rennes and Lille above them when they travelled to Nantes, as both teams had dropped points in the battle for the European spots.
The hunger from Le Gym was easy to see early on as Badredine Bouanani tested Alban Lafont in goal for Nantes with a stinging drive after only four minutes, but the Les Canaries goalkeeper was up to the task, making a brilliant save and turning the ball around for a corner.
Nice would not be denied much longer, and they opened the scoring from the resulting corner, with Nigerian forward Terem Moffi guiding a header into the net after being unmarked in the box.
After a slow start to life in Nice, Moffi has found a rich vein of form, and his goal was his third in his last three Ligue 1 appearances for the club.
Nantes responded well to the setback and peppered Nice's goal in the first half, searching for an equaliser.
They eventually got their goal just after the half-hour mark, as ex-Tottenham man Moussa Sissoko headed Nantes level from a well-worked set piece.
Nantes then had the chance to go ahead after they were awarded a penalty but winger Ludovic Blas was unable to convert, hitting the crossbar with Les Canaries' best chance of the game.
The sides entered the half-time break level at one goal apiece, but Nantes probably felt they should have been ahead after Blas’ penalty miss and other wasted chances.
Their missed chances took on even more significance in the second half as Nice came out of the half-time break with renewed vigour and created chance after chance to take the lead against Nantes.
Their relentless pressure eventually paid off when Moffi set up Burundi defender Youssouf Ndayishimiye to rifle home a powerful effort from the edge of the area to give Nice a well-deserved 2-1 lead.
The visitors thought this would be enough to give them all three points, but got their hearts broken when Mostafa Mohamed headed home Nantes equaliser in the 88th minute to earn a point for the hosts.
Nice fail to take advantage of slip-ups in the race for Europe
Mohamed’s late equaliser meant that Nantes failed to take advantage after both Rennes and Lille drew their fixtures earlier.
Nice remain seventh on the table, four points behind Rennes fifth and three points behind Lille in sixth as the battle for European places next season takes shape.
Man of the Match
Terem Moffi continues to impress in Ligue 1 this season, scoring his 15th goal of the 2022/23 campaign, and has also added a new dimension to his game after registering his second assist for Nice since his winter move, after failing to assist in the league in the first half of the season.
