Marseille have been rocked by news that Azzedine Ounahi will miss the rest fo the season

Marseille midfielder Azzzedine Ounahi has been ruled out for the rest of the season following an injury during Morocco’s iconic victory over Brazil during the just-concluded international break.

Ounahi signed for French giants Marseille in the January transfer window in a €10 million deal after an impressive campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Ounahi was one of the stars of the World Cup in Qatar as Morocco defied all odds to become the first African nation to reach the semifinals in the tournament’s 92-year history.

Ounahi was one of the Atlas Lions; standout players alongside goalkeeper Yaccine Bounou, and his performances in midfield sparked a bidding war among clubs who were desperate for his services in the January transfer window which opened a few days after the World Cup final.

Napoli, Leeds, Inter, and even Barcelona were rumoured to be interested in the brilliant midfielder, but ultimately, Marseille won the race for his signature and signed him two days before the end of the January transfer window.

Since then, Ounahi has played sparingly for Marseille after starting off with a wonder goal on his debut.

Ounahi has started only once in 10 possible games for Marseille since his move as he tries to acclimatise to his new surroundings after showing a lot of promise.

However, his progression in the L’OM team has been severely hampered by a broken toe, which he suffered while on international duty for Morocco against Brazil which means he will now miss the next two months of action and effectively ends his season prematurely.

Ounahi will undergo rehabilitation on his toe, which he should be able to complete in time for the resumption of the 2023/24 campaign barring any unfortunate set backs in his recovery journey.
