Patrice Evra slams PSG over Kim Kardashian stunt
Former Manchester United and France star Patrice Evra has suggested that French club Paris Saint-Germain is being run like a show business club, accusing them of choosing global superstars like Kim Kardashian as the face of the club, rather than ex-players who have more history with the team.
Evra was a global superstar himself after representing clubs like Manchester United, Juventus, and Monaco during his playing career.
He won five Premier League titles with Manchester United as well as two Serie A titles with Juventus, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2008 with the Red Devils, while also being a losing finalist in four other finals.
He represented France 81 times in 13 years and was regarded as one of the best players during his time with the national team before retiring to a life of punditry.
Evra criticizes PSG’s show business approach
Although Evra only played for seven years in the French top flight, he still has experience with Ligue 1 and on this basis determined that league leaders PSG still had a long way to go before they are seen as a football-first club, as opposed to the show business he believes they currently run.
Evra was critical of PSG’s management in a recent interview with former Les Parisiens player Jerome Rothen on the latter’s RMC show “Rothen’s s’enflamme” where he bashed the current way the club is being run as being closer to show business than a football club.
Evra was especially critical of a recent publicity stunt that saw Hollywood celebrity Kim Kardashian attend a game at the Parc de Princes and asked why ex-PSG players were not invited instead.
“In the VIP stands, you don’t see [former PSG player] Bernard Lama, instead it’s Kim Kardashian and the like. Evra said, noting that “It’s a show business club, football isn’t the priority, no.
Evra believes Hollywood style is responsible for PSG’s UCL struggles
Evra explained his criticism further, saying, “Nasser Al Khelaifi loves the club, they’re doing a great job – but the message seems to be that when I’m going to watch a PSG game, it’s to watch a concert. I’m in the VIP lodge, there’s Champagne, appetizers... But guys, where are the old players?”
Evra explained that the Hollywood approach was part of the reason why PSG had not made progress in the Champions League despite having a star-studded squad.
Evra said he was not surprised about PSG’s exit in the Champions League Round of 16 exit against Bayern Munich as he claims that the team play “with a cigar in their mouths” in Ligue 1 and cannot compete with the bigger teams in the UCL.
