Two football players lost their lives when they were struck by lightning during a friendly game in the Manyansi area of Kisii County on Saturday evening.
The incident – which occurred in Kitutu Chache North Constituency in the afternoon – happened when Manyansi FC and Gianchore FC were playing.
Each team lost a player, while others are nursing injuries at Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital, where they were rushed for emergency treatment, according to Citizen Digital.
The unfortunate event occurred three years after lightning struck yet another soccer tournament in the region. One person was killed then, and two others were treated after sustaining serious injuries.
Given the frequent lightning strikes in the region, residents have always been urged to install lightning arrestors to curb the menace.
