The Nice U-12 coach has been touted as a possible replacement for the embattled Finidi George

Following the reported resignation of Super Eagles manager Finidi George, a fan has called for former Nigeria international Onyekachi Apam to be given a shot at the job.

Finidi struggles in Super Eagles role

After only two matches as permanent manager of the Super Eagles, Finidi reportedly resigned from his role as manager following disappointing results against South Africa and the Benin Republic during 2026 World Cup qualifying.

A draw against South Africa and a loss to Benin left Nigeria’s chances of reaching the 2026 World Cup in tatters, with fans calling for Finidi’s head, and the NFF deciding to hire an expatriate technical adviser to oversee the national team manager.

The former Ajax winger reportedly dropped his resignation notice following the disappointing results and NFF’s decision to find a technical adviser, leaving the position of Super Eagles manager vacant.

Apam touted for Super Eagles job

Following the news of Finidi’s resignation, calls have come for another former Nigeria international, Apam, to take the reins of the national team.

Apam, who played 14 times for the Super Eagles was also part of the 2005 team that finished second at the World Youth Championships and the 2008 Dream Team that won a silver medal at the Olympic Games, losing both finals to Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina teams.

The centre-back suffered through an injury-laden career and was forced to retire at the relatively young age of 28, before embarking on a coaching career with one of his former clubs OGC Nice’s youth teams.

He has been with the French club in a coaching capacity since 2021, and a fan of the Super Eagles believes Apam, who is listed as Nice U-12 head coach could be the man to fill the vacancy allegedly left by Finidi.
