Gor Mahia, without four key players, faces AFC Leopards in Mashemeji derby, with coach McKinstry seeking his first win against Ingwe.

Defending champions Gor Mahia head into the highly-anticipated Mashemeji derby without four key players this Saturday at Kasarani Stadium.

Despite the absences, coach Jonathan McKinstry remains confident and undeterred, focusing on the team’s recent positive performance where they have won two and drawn three in the last five matches.

According to McKinstry, the absence of these players won’t heavily impact the team's performance as they haven't been starting in the recent games.

“We have historic injuries that are still resurfacing, and Gad Mathews began training this week. However, it is probable that he will only be back in contention after the international break,” shared McKinstry, acknowledging the players’ eagerness to join the roster but emphasising the importance of adequate preparation.

The upcoming match is crucial for both teams but for different reasons. While Gor Mahia are looking to continue with their impressive form, AFC Leopards desperately seek their first win of the season. Positioned at 15th place with a meager four points, Leopards enter the derby as underdogs but with a hunger for victory.

Despite Ingwe's underdog status, McKinstry has warned against underestimating them. “The gap is not big in the league as the league table is not big so we know if we provide them with opportunities they can punish us,” the seasoned coach noted, highlighting the volatile nature of football where tables can turn quickly.

Adding to the intensity of the match, McKinstry has not secured a win against AFC Leopards in his three attempts since taking the reins at Gor Mahia.

The last face-off between the two ended with a 2-1 victory in favour of AFC Leopards, putting extra pressure on McKinstry and his squad to reclaim their glory and prevent back-to-back defeats.

When asked about their favourite status heading into the match, McKinstry quickly dismissed the idea.

“If AFC Leopards could have turned their four draws into wins, they could be on the same level with his charges,” he reflected.

“We are satisfied with how the season has started. We want to be tight at the back and that is something we are rectifying going into the game," he further added.

As the derby approaches, the stage is set for a thrilling encounter between the two rivals.

With the defending champions, Gor Mahia, and league leaders, Posta Rangers, remaining undefeated this season, the pressure is on for both teams to perform.

McKinstry’s experience and strategic acumen will be tested as he leads Gor Mahia in search of a pivotal win.

With injuries and past defeats casting shadows, the team will need to muster strength, strategy, and a bit of luck to emerge victoriously in the iconic Mashemeji Derby.
