Leicester City's forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, faces uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations

Kelechi Iheanacho is one of the 25 named by Jose Peseiro to represent the Super Eagles at the AFCON in a few weeks, but his participation is now in doubt after he sustained an injury.

What happened

The Leicester City forward faces uncertainty over his participation in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations as he has recently been sidelined due to a muscle injury and was notably absent in the Fox's 2-0 triumph over Cardiff.

Leicester City boss Enzo Maresca provided insights post-match, stating, “Kelechi had a muscle problem two days ago," per Leicester Mecury. We are still waiting to see if it’s something important or a matter of days. But I don’t think he will be able for the next one (against Huddersfield)

AFCON participation in Jeopardy

This setback comes at a crucial time, as Iheanacho was just named in Nigeria's 25-man squad for AFCON, slated to begin in two weeks in the Ivory Coast. The full extent of Iheanacho's injury is still under evaluation.

Maresca expressed concerns regarding his availability for the tournament. “We don’t know yet (if it will affect his Afcon call-up). It depends on the injury. If it’s an important injury, he has no chance to go. If it’s not important, he can go.”

Nigeria's Striking Options at AFCON

Iheanacho's potential absence could be a significant blow to Nigeria's striking force. The squad, however, boasts other formidable attackers like Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, and Samuel Chukwueze.

Leicester City anticipate the absence of several key players in January and possibly into early February due to international commitments. Wilfred Ndidi joins Iheanacho in the Nigeria squad; Patson Daka is expected to feature for Zambia; Abdul Fatawu is a hopeful for Ghana; and Harry Souttar is set to represent Australia in the Asian Cup.
