Inter have won the reverse fixture after losing the the first-leg of the Milan derby.
Inter Milan dominated proceedings against their flatmates, but the outcome was the smallest margin possible; a strike from Lautaro Martinez helped the Nerazzurri win by 1-0.
Inter were the official home team on the night at the Guiseppe Meazza as they hosted a Milan team that they demolished in the Supercopa Italiana. The margin tonight was slimmer, as Lautaro's first-half strike was enough for them to trump their eternal rivals.
Lautaro Martinez got the game's only goal in the 34th minute, and despite the best efforts of the home team, the second-half remained barren.
The win helps Inter keep pace with league leaders Napoli, keeping the margin at 13 points. Conversely, AC Milan misses a chance to climb back into the top four.
How it happened
Inter started the game on the front foot, as they peppered Milan's goal early on, with Ciprain Tatarusanu pulling off a couple of saves to deny Martinez.
Lautaro would not be denied anymore as he reacted quickest to a corner-kick delivery from Hakan Calhanoglu, planting a header into the dismayed Tatarusanu's near post.
AC Milan seldom troubled Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana throughout the game, barely putting the Cameroonian to the test. Lautaro thought he doubled Inter's lead late in the game, but referee Davide Massa disallowed the goal on the advice of the VAR for offside.
Romelu Lukaku had a good chance late on to double Inter's lead, firing into the bottom corner, but Tatarusanu was up to it parrying it for a corner. The resulting corner did not amount to much before the referee ended proceedings for a Derby Della Madonnina victory for Inter.
