Frank Lampard has been confirmed as new Chelsea manager until the end of the season and the club legend has hinted he is looking beyond that time frame.
Chelsea have confirmed club legend and former manager, Frank Lampard will take over as interim manager until the end of the 2022/23 season.
Lampard returns to Chelsea
The news was announced on the club's official Twitter account on Thursday, bringing a temporary end to the search for a new manager with Lampard now Caretaker Manager until June.
The 44-year-old has been brought in to steady the ship after Graham Potter was sacked in the wake of the home defeat to Aston Villa last weekend.
A joint statement by owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali read: “We are delighted to welcome Frank back to Stamford Bridge. Frank is a Premier League Hall of Famer and a legend at this club.
“As we continue our thorough and exhaustive process for a permanent head coach, we want to provide the club and our fans with a clear and stable plan for the remainder of the season.
"We want to give ourselves every chance of success and Frank has all of the characteristics and qualities we need to drive us to the finish line."
Lampard eyes long-term Chelsea deal
Frank Lampard, who was sacked by Everton after a dismal run of results, expressed delight at the opportunity and hinted at a longer stay at the helm if possible.
“I will do my best, then we will see what happens," he said.
It won't be my decision [long-term]. I understand I will be asked a lot, I've got my eyes open. I'm excited as there’s lot of talent here.
“It was easy to accept this job for me; this is my club”.
Chelsea have a crucial run of fixtures on the horizon and it is imperative that Lampard hits the ground running. They travel to the Molineux on Saturday and that is never an easy fixture, especially with Wolves still fighting for safety.
The Blues are currently 11th in the Premier League standings, 14 points off fourth place, essentially, the only way to qualify for the Champions League next season is to win it.
Standing in the way of that dream is a double-header against Real Madrid.
