Barcelona's Xavi Hernandez was left shocked by Ancelotti's claims that the Blaugrana only won because of a refereeing decision
Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez says he was left “shocked” after Carlo Ancelotti referenced Marco Asensio’s offside goal as being dubious and the reason for the Blaugrana’s El Clasico win.
Barcelona win after Asensio goal ruled out
Xavi’s Barcelona side were left ecstatic after a 92nd-minute Franck Kessie goal secured victory against Real Madrid in Sunday’s El Clasico.
Barcelona dominated for large spells of the game, but almost lost the match at the death as Marco Asensio found the back o the net from a Dani Carvajal cross.
However, upon review by VAR, the goal was ruled out after Asensio was deemed to be offisde, and 10 minutes after the referee’s decision, Barcelona scored the winner through Kessie.
In the wake of the match, Ancelotti stated that he had doubts about whether Asensio was truly offside and that he felt his side should have won the match.
Xavi says Barcelona won fair and square
Xavi disagreed with the Italian manager’s sentiment, noting that Barcelona had been the better side and fully deserved their win.
He also confessed to being shocked by Ancelotti’s statements about Asensio’s goal, saying that there could be no doubts about the decision which he deemed to be scientific.
Xavi told SPORT after the game, “I'm surprised that Ancelotti has doubts about the disallowed goal, because it's a scientific question. It is clearly offside and there is no doubt.”
He continued, “If people are talking about the VAR today, it's a joke. The offside is very clear."
Xavi has now beaten Real Madrid three times in a row this season, and at three different stadiums after beating Los Blancos at the King Fahd International Stadium in the SupeCopa de Espana, at the Benabeu in the Copa del Rey and now the Camp Nou in LaLiga.
The win leaves Barcelona with a 12-point lead at the top of the LaLiga table that almost ensures they will be crowned champions at the end of the season.
