Premier League club Arsenal have offered their support to Rwandans all over the world as they commence the week long remembrance of the genocide against the Tutsi people that occurred 29 years ago.
Kwibuka which means ‘to remember’, describes the annual commemoration of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
The gruesome genocide took place between April and July 1994 during the Rwandan Civil War.
Over the 100-day period, members of the Tutsi minority ethnic group, as well as several from the Hutu group were killed, with the estimated number of casualties close to 800,000.
Arsenal stand with Rwanda
Premier League side Arsenal have deep ties with Rwanda as both parties have shared a partnership since 2018.
Arsenal signed a three year deal with the Rwanda Development Board in 2018 as part of the country’s quest to be globally recognized as a leading tourist destination, using the ‘Visit Rwanda’ as a tool to promote their message.
As well as being the Gunners official tourism partners, the ‘Visit Rwanda’ logo features prominent on the left sleeves of the club’s official playing kits.
In 2021, Arsenal renewed their contract with the tourism brand for four more years at a reported figure of £10m a year.
