Obiero has now been training with the Rising Stars setup for close to two weeks since jetting in from England ahead of the U-20 AFCON.

As Kenya's U-20 national team fine-tunes preparations for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, midfielder Kevin Wangaya has offered insights into how newly-invited foreign-based players, including former Tottenham Hotspur youth product Zech Obiero are integrating into the squad.

The Rising Stars, who are currently camping at the MPESA Foundation Academy in Thika, are set to travel to Egypt later this month for the continental showdown.

Several overseas-based talents have joined the local contingent in camp, among them former Wigan midfielder Ruben Grewal, Jeremy Bissau, and Dutch-based goalkeeper Caleb Obida Kramer.

Obiero, who linked up with the squad last week, is pushing to make the final 21-man roster and appears to be settling in well—according to Wangaya.

“Everyone knows why he is here. They have come in well and they are pushing themselves,” said Wangaya on Monday.

“We are creating a good environment of love and togetherness and they have adapted well to it.”

Specifically addressing Obiero’s progress, the midfielder acknowledged that while there were initial challenges, the team has been working closely with him to build chemistry.

“He is playing well. We just need to combine better with him, which we are working on in training,” he noted.

“While we are creating a friendship  with him, we are explaining to him what he needs to do, what he needs to improve on, where he needs to cover and how he needs to play with the team.

“He is better considering that we did not have a good understanding over the first few days, but he is now catching up well.”

With anticipation building ahead of the U-20 AFCON, Wangaya stressed the team’s collective ambition: not just to compete, but to leave a mark.

“We know what we want at the tournament. We hope the fans will pray for us and support us,” he said. “We will work hard and hopefully get to the semi-finals and finals.

“Let them support us, and we will do our part. Our aim is to make at least the semis and even qualify for the final, which will enable us to qualify for the World Cup.”

Wangaya also commended the atmosphere in camp, describing it as energised and united.

“The energy in camp is fantastic and the camaraderie is great. We are ready,” he concluded.

Kenya will be hoping that the blend of local grit and foreign polish can carry them deep into the tournament—and possibly to their first-ever FIFA U-20 World Cup.

They will face Sierra Leone in their first clash of Group C on May 1, before facing Zambia three days later. They will then complete their group stage campaign against Senegal on May 7.
