Maina came on as a substitute with 33 minutes to go, and his impact played a huge role in helping Koln survive automatic relegation with three games of the season left to play.
With the draw, Koln are on 23 points and in 17th place, five behind Bochum who are in the relegation/promotion playoff place, and they will have to win their remaining three games and hope Bochum slip to stand a chance of staying in the German top flight next season.
Leandor Barreiro scored the opening goal in the 25th minute for Mainz, but Koln equalised in the dying minutes through Florian Kainz.
In England, Zech Obiero, the promising talent who recently signed a two-year deal with Leyton Orient, delivered a standout performance in their English League One encounter against Shrewsbury FC.
