Kenya vs Zimbabwe: Must-win match for Emerging Stars at COSAFA Cup

Kenya’s Emerging Stars must beat Zimbabwe to avoid an early elimination from the COSAFA Cup on Tuesday.

Kenya’s Emerging Stars have no margin for error as they face Zimbabwe in their final group match at the COSAFA Cup on Tuesday.

Ken Odhiambo’s men suffered a 2-0 loss to Comoros on Sunday which made their path to the semi-final tricky as they must beat the Warriors to stay in contention given there is a possibility of three teams in Group B ending with six points.

Kenya were rocked by a red card for Paul Ochuoga as he picked up a second yellow after 33 minutes, which also led to a Comoros penalty. Affane Djambae made no mistake from the spot for the islanders.

Djambae doubled his side’s lead early in the second half with a neat finish from the edge of the box to make it 2-0 and wrap up the points against the 10 men of Kenya.

Zimbabwe lead Group B with six points, followed by Comoros and Kenya with three each, but no team is through the semifinals yet.

With Kenya playing Zimbabwe and Comoros up against Zambia, it is conceivable that three teams may finish on six points in the pool with only holders Zambia are out of the running.

Kenya cannot afford to rest on their laurels given how Comoros run them rugged and would want to start strongly to subdue their opponents.

Zimbabwe will not be pushovers, however, after starting their campaign with a 1-0 win over Comoros before stunning defending champions Zambia 2-0 last weekend.

The young Kenyan team will draw inspiration from Harambee Stars’ 3-1 victory over Zimbabwe at the Four Nations tournament in March but Odhiambo and his technical team must get their tactics spot on.

Kenya’s plan against Comoros fell apart somewhat following Ochuoga’s red card but they will need to be prepared for all scenarios against the Warriors if they have to avoid an early elimination from the tournament where they are a guest team.

Time and where to watch?
