Harambee Stars will shift focus to their World Cup qualifier against Gabon in Nairobi on Sunday and here is everything you need to know about the must-win clash.

Harambee Stars turn their attention to Gabon after their thrilling 3-3 draw with The Gambia as the race to qualify for the 2026 World Cup hots up.

Benni McCarthy’s team snatched a point from the jaws of defeat in Abidjan following a frantic second half that saw both sides score three goals each with Kenya coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 and then again from 3-2 down for 3-3, with their third goal being the last kick of the game.

It is not the result that McCarthy and his team were looking for as they needed maximum points to boost their qualification chances but they will be happy with the fighting spirit ahead of Sunday’s game against Gabon at home.

Harambee Stars now have six points from their five games, which leaves them six behind Gabon, who thrashed Seychelles 3-0 on Thursday, while Ivory Coast can go seven ahead of them if they beat Burundi on Friday.

It means Kenya must beat Gabon in Nairobi on Sunday to revive their chances of qualifying for the World Cup as that would take them to nine points but to do that, McCarthy must find the best possible lineup for the match.

Team News

Coach Benni McCarthy must have seen lots of things that impressed him and others that he did not like on Thursday and their display against The Gambia will inform how he picks his starting XI.

Harambee Stars fielded an experienced lineup but it is the ‘kids’ who saved the day and with Brain Mandela and Daniel Anyembe below par in central defence, changes are expected at the back. Johnstone Omurwa is likely to start after being left on the bench.

The midfield will also witness changes with Mohamed Bajaber and William Lenkupae angling for starts after impressing on Thursday while there could also be space for Duke Abuya and in attack, captain Michael Olunga faces a battle to keep his place after a less than impressive game.

Kenya vs Gabon: Kick off time & Venue

Harambee Stars are set to play their first competitive match at home in four years with their last game in front of their fans being in November 2021.

Nyayo Stadium was opened to fans last Sunday March 16, when Junior Starlets hosted Uganda in a Women’s U17 World Cup qualifier, and the renovated facility will play host to the Harambee Stars and Gabon match that will kick off at 4pm Kenyan time.

Home advantage will be crucial for Kenya as they look to benefit from the impact of the 12th man, having missed a partisan crowd for such a long time.

Kenya vs Gabon: Where to watch

Harambee Stars fans who cannot make it to Nyayo Stadium for Sunday’s match can tune in to KCB TV from 4pm while the match will also be broadcast live on SuperSport TV.
