Experienced Kenya Police defender David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng is the latest to earn a call-up to the Harambee Stars squad ahead of Tuesday’s crunch match against Ivory Coast.

Kenya Police defender David ‘Cheche’ Ochieng will link up with the Harambee Stars squad in Malawi after earning a late call-up from coach Engin Firat.

Ochieng will be the latest player to join the camp to beef up Kenya’s defence for Tuesday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against African champions Ivory Coast at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.

The defender is among players called late into camp by Firat, joining Malawi-based Clyde Senaji and Kenya Police team-mate David Okoth in receiving invitations at the weekend.

Ochieng is a highly-experienced defender who was among key players under Firat before he lost his position in the team.

His last appearance in a Kenyan shirt came in June 2023 when he played in the Four Nations tournament in games against Pakistan and Mauritius.

He has, however, maintained high levels of performance at club level even when not earning a spot in the national team and should boost the Kenyan defence which is missing key players such as Joseph Okumu and Erick ‘Marcelo’ Ouma.

In the absence of Okumu, right-back Daniel Anyembe partnered Johnstone Omurwa in central defence against Burundi and he did not cover himself in glory as it was from his mistake that the Swallows grabbed an easy equaliser.

Harambee Stars face the African champions with their backs against the wall following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Burundi last week.

Defeat to the Ivorians will make their path to World Cup qualification even more difficult as they would be eight points behind the group leaders after just four matches.
