Although Were scored his first goal for Police during their 2-1 loss to Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminary clash last week, he has also missed some crucial chances for the side in his three appearances so far,

Kenya Police head coach Anthony ‘Modo’ believes new signing Jesse Were has the capability to cement his legacy for the club despite his early-season blushes in front of goal for the Law Enforcers.

Were, who signed for the club on a free transfer after returning from Zesco United at the end of last season, scored his first goal for the club in competitive action during their 2-1 away loss to Zamalek, as the side fell short of reaching the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup nearly a fortnight ago.

Were was particularly profligate especially in the first leg in Nairobi, missing two crucial chances in a match that would otherwise have seen the South C-based outfit beat the Egyptian giants by three clear goals which would have given them a good chance to get to the next stage.

He also missed a couple of chances during their opening league clash against Tusker last Sunday, which saw their profligacy eventually count against them as the Alemen capitalised on their only chance to force a 1-1 draw.

However, Modo remains confident in the former Harambee Stars’ man’s capability to still find the back of the net.

“Jesse is a top player who has been doing wonders at Zesco United and Zambian football in general,” Modo told Pulse Sports.

“Since he has come here, he has been finding the back of the net in friendly matches, like when we played a warmup against Gor Mahia. and he is even the one that found the back of the net when we played Zamalek.

“He is a good striker. He is still getting into good positions and is showing that he has what it takes  to help us start banging them in on a regular basis.

“It is still pretty early in his and I am pretty sure that he is soon going to be making those chances look easy to score.”

While Kimani remains optimistic about Were’s form, he voiced his frustration over the team’s inability to capitalize on their chances in both the Zamalek and Tusker matches.

Speaking about the 1-1 draw with Tusker, Kimani lamented, “We were hurt by our failure to convert chances, which gave Tusker the belief that they were still in the game.”

The former AFC Leopards tactician emphasized the importance of finishing games strongly, especially after holding a first-half lead.

“We need to improve our concentration and kill off games when we have the momentum. Our conversion rate has to increase because we are creating plenty of chances that we’re not capitalizing on,” he added.

Kimani will have time to fine-tune his squad as they prepare to face Ulinzi Stars after the international break, hoping for a more clinical display in front of goal to secure their first win of the season.
