Kakamega Homeboyz overcame Shabana 1-0 albeit under controversial circumstances after the referee denied Shabana a last-gasp equaliser.
Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Francis Baraza has revealed the tactical blueprint that earned his side a gritty 1-0 win over Shabana in a drama-filled FKF Cup Round of 16 tie on Sunday.
While most of the post-match headlines were dominated by Shabana’s disallowed late equaliser and the resulting chaos from frustrated fans, Baraza stayed above the controversy, insisting that it was his tactics, and not bad officiating, that won his charges the match.
“The boys worked hard,” said Baraza. “When we played Shabana previously, they scored four goals against us, so they thought it would be easy.”

Akani Simbine Obliterates Bayanda Walaza’s World Lead As He Beats Improving Ferdinand Omanyala In Botswana
South Africa’s Akani Simbine clocked a world leading time to edge out Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix.
That 4-1 humbling just weeks ago clearly left a mark on the veteran tactician. Determined not to suffer a repeat, Baraza went back to the drawing board, pinpointing the spaces Shabana had exploited in their previous meeting and drilling his players to shut them down.
“Before the game, we worked on blocking the spaces they would likely have exploited. We trained them to be cautious, and it made life difficult for Shabana today.
“They found it difficult to execute channel balls, and our keeper was not tested a lot except for the last minute.”
Homeboyz took the lead early in the 20th minute through Moses Mudavadi, and while Shabana thought they had snatched a last-gasp equaliser via Dennis Okoth, referee Isaac Hamisi controversially ruled it out for an earlier foul by Austin Odongo on Brian Eshianda.

BREAKING: Aldrine Kibet, Amos Wanjala Headline Final Kenya U-20 AFCON Squad
Kenya U20 squad set for AFCON in Egypt after Morocco camp aiming for World Cup spot with strong local lineup.
That decision infuriated Shabana fans, who threw projectiles onto the pitch, forcing a ten-minute stoppage. Head coach Peter Okidi also unleashed a tirade against the center referee Ismael Hamisi.
But Baraza dismissed any notion that the officiating tilted the game in their favour.
“We created a lot of chances. Moses Shummah had a chance and missed after testing their keeper. Henry Omollow had two chances and missed.
“We created the better chances and should have scored three or more goals. I therefore do not believe that the referee helped us.”

Top 10 Greatest Goals in Football History
From Lionel Messi's spectacular against Getafe in 2007 to Diego Maradona's stunner against England in 1986, these are the top 10 greatest goals in football history.
The experienced coach also heaped praise on his goalkeeper Ibrahim Wanzala, who produced two stunning late saves to preserve the narrow win once play resumed.
Looking ahead, Baraza is not taking any chances as Homeboyz prepare for a quarter-final showdown against Nairobi United, a side he believes could be on the brink of something big.
“Nairobi United had gone to all corners finding good players. Before, their financial situation was not ideal but now they are better. They have a good coach and some good players that could give problems to other teams.
“I will not underrate them. I will make sure my team is prepared. It will be a tough game. I have not watched a lot of their games but their results suggest they are dangerous. They could be playing in the big league next season.”
With their FKF Cup title defence still alive and continental football within reach, Baraza will be banking on his team’s newfound tactical discipline to carry them through the next hurdle as they attempt to reclaim the title they last won in 2023.
