The Sugar Millers are stepping up their preparations ahead of the National Sevens Circuit which will commence on July 1 in Kisumu.

Kabras Sugar RFC sevens head coach Felix Ayange believes his side ‘are on the right track’ as they prepare to take part in this season’s sevens circuit, with the first leg taking place in Kisumu on Saturday, July 1.

The Kakamega-based outfit, who won the last leg of the 2022 circuit in their own backyard, will be seeking to carry on that momentum to Kisumu.

Although they started their preparations late after a “grueling season” that saw them lift both the Kenya Cup and the Enterprise Cup, the former Shujaa player believes that they have stepped up their preparations well and are ready for the task ahead.

“We are one of the teams that started our preparations late having played in the Enterprise Cup final,” he said. “We needed to give the players time to rest and recover and recuperate from a gruesome 15s season,” he added.

“We started about five or six weeks ago and had to sit with the rest of the team on how we will tackle this year’s sevens circuit.

“We are on track. Everything is going well. We were supposed to have friendly matches this weekend. I will say we are on track as of now.”

Kabras have been hotly tipped to be one of the favorites to win this season’s title. They will be boosted by the return of  Kevin Wekesa and Brian Tanga, who were named in the HSBC London Sevens Team of the Tournament amidst the cruel relegation suffered at the hands of Canada.

Meanwhile, the Dala Sevens leg will take place at the Moi Stadium in Kisumu, opening this season’s circuit.

The coastal city of Mombasa will host the second round, the Driftwood Sevens at the Mombasa Sports Club on Saturday 8 July before the circuit breaks for the World Rugby U20 Trophy taking place in Nairobi on 15-30 July.

Nakuru City will host the third round, the Prinsloo Sevens at the Nakuru Athletic Club on 5 August before Nairobi’s RFUEA Ground hosts the Christie Sevens on Saturday 12 August.

Nairobi will also play host to the circuit finale when the George Mwangi Kabeberi Memorial sevens is held on Satuday, 9 September.

The Tisap Sevens will then serve as the last leg, with the tournament being held on Saturday 24 September at the Eldoret Sports Club.
