Marion Serenge has blamed unlucky defeat to England during the side's World Cup debut to one major factor.

The Junior Starlets' forward, Marion Serenge, has attributed the side's 2-0 loss to England on their debut FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup clash to a lack of experience.

Facing the 2008 semi-finalists on Friday, the Junior Starlets were unable to secure a victory, with England claiming a 2-0 win. Lola Brown converted a 29th-minute penalty to give England the lead before Lauryn Thompson sealed the result with a late goal in the 87th minute, ensuring a confident performance from the European side against the World Cup debutants.

Speaking after the match, the 16-year-old Serenge attributed the defeat to the inexperience within the Kenyan squad, acknowledging that their first World Cup appearance was a tough learning experience.

"The game was really tough. We have tried our best. Since it is our first experience, we are going to prepare more," Serenge remarked during a post-match interview.

The young forward, a student at Archbishop Njenga Girls High School in Kakamega, further emphasised that the team would return to their training base and focus on addressing their weaknesses following their World Cup induction.

"We have now experienced it (World Cup), we know it is going to be better for us as we are going to work on our weak points," Serenge added confidently.

Despite the disappointing start, Serenge was optimistic about the team’s chances in the tournament, urging Kenyans to keep the faith and support the squad as they aim to find a winning formula in their next match.

"I can tell the fans that it is not like we have lost it all. We are going to regain it by working on our weaknesses to improve ahead of our next match," she stated, urging fans to remain hopeful.

The Mildred Cheche-coached side is now looking ahead to a crucial clash against North Korea, the most successful team in the history of the tournament. This match, scheduled for Sunday 20th October at Estadio Cibao FC, will be pivotal as the Junior Starlets seek their first-ever FIFA World Cup victory. They will later complete their group stage campaign with a fixture against Mexico on Thursday 24th October.

The challenge is undoubtedly significant, but with Serenge’s confidence and the team’s determination to improve, Kenyans will be watching closely as the Junior Starlets aim to make history on the world stage.
