The two players have been left heartbroken after missing out on the final squad that will represent Kenya at the FIFA U17 Girls World Cup despite being part of the team that qualified.

Junior Starlets duo Claire Meris and Mitshele Waithera have been left disappointed after they failed to make the cut to final team that is set to travel to Spain for their pre-FIFA U17 World Cup camp.

The two were part of the squad that made history when they became the first ever Kenyan team to qualify for a FIFA World Cup.

However, as the team prepares to depart the country for their camp in Spain on Thursday, the two will not be part of the travelling squad after being dropped from coach Mildred Cheche’s team over what has been described as poor form.

According to reports, national team scouts who were at the national school games recently spotted more girls who were impressive at the event and had them join the rest of the squad in their training camp and two of them ultimately made it to the final team with Waithera and Meris among those dropped.

However, the two have complained of being left in the dark over their exclusion although they have earned a reprieve somewhat after Sports Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen promised to have them travel to the Dominican Republic to support the team.

The team will use the camp in Spain to tune up for the FIFA U17 Girls World Cup which will run from October 16 to November 3, 2024.

The Junior Starlets will begin their group stage matches on October 18 against England, followed by a clash with Korea DPR on October 20 before taking on Mexico on October 24.
