Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee has opened up on what drove him to settle for Manchester United from Italian side Bologna.
Manchester United new signing Joshua Zirkzee has finally broken his silence on his decision to sign for the Premier League giants, sparking debate on social media.
The 23-year-old Dutch international traded Italian Serie A side Bologna in July this year for Manchester United in a bid to further his career in English football after helping Bologna qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.
Zirkzee has scored once for United in the Premier League this season. The Red Devils snapped up the hawk-eyed striker in a deal worth more than €40 million ($43m).
Zirkzee signed a contract with United until June 2029, with the option to extend it for another season, with coach Erik Ten Hag maintaining that his compatriot is a player for the present and future.
Zirkzee scored 11 goals in 33 appearances for Bologna last season but started the curtain raiser Community Shield class against Manchester City in mid August from the bench
“What attracted me to join Man United? Well… this club is just huge. Let me say that Manchester United attracted me, not really the Premier League,” Zirkzee, who boasts one goal in three appearances for the Netherlands told ViaPlay.
His comments sparked reactions on X, formerly Twitter, with many praising him for choosing Manchester United over their rivals
@GhanaYesu said, "Fun Fact; Manchester United is the only team that makes the Premier League still attractive even in our worst form. We're the biggest club for a reason!”
@KitungaDavid added, "Manchester United, the biggest club in the world.”
@i_am_rajat also weighed in. "Zirkzee mentioned having a "very, very good feeling" about the move, which underscores the importance of personal connection and intuition in his decision-making process. His affection for Bologna was noted, but the allure of Manchester United was stronger.”
Zirkzee will hope for a starting role this weekend as United entertain Crystal Palace after demolishing Barnsley 7-0 in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
