Harambee Stars striker Jonah Ayunga finished the Scottish Premiership campaign with a flourish as he had a key contribution that could make him a weapon for Benni McCarthy.

Harambee Stars striker Jonah Ayunga ended his season with a flourish when he helped his club St Mirren to a sixth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership.

Ayunga scored one and assisted another as St Mirren beat Ross County 3-2 in their final match of the season on Saturday, which sees the club finish in the top six for a third straight season, and secured a place in next season’s Europa Conference League qualifying round.

It was just Ayunga’s second league goal of the season in a campaign in which he has not shown sharpness in front of goal.

However, what he lacked in goals, he compensated in other areas as he finished the season with four assists in the league, the highest by a St Mirren player this term.

It shows how the striker has become integral to the team beyond scoring goals, something that can help Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy in future assignments.

Ayunga was a substitute in McCarthy’s first two games against The Gambia and Gabon in the World Cup qualifiers in March but his assists prove that he can perhaps contribute beyond scoring if he starts up front alongside captain Michael Olunga.

The two have only started together once in recent matches for Harambee Stars, being the 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Kenya’s final 2025 Africa Cup of Nations last November, when he scored, but McCarthy could benefit from his ability to create chances for his team-mates in future.

Ayunga has been averaging two goals a season in the last three campaigns, managing three in 2022-23, two each in 2023-24 and 2024-25, but he has improved his assists numbers as he ended the just-concluded campaign with six across all competitions.

St Mirren are reportedly set to offer the English-born defender a new contract as per the Daily Record.
