Former Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry got off to a perfect start as the Gambia coach as they recorded a big win against Seychelles to get closer to Kenya on the standings.

Former Gor Mahia coach Johnathan McKinstry got off to a perfect start as the Gambia national team coach following a 5-1 thrashing of Seychelles in their 2026 World Cup qualifier on Saturday.

McKinstry, who ditched Gor Mahia for the Gambia last month, was thrilled to watch the Scorpions sting the Pirates to record their first points on the board in their qualifying group that also has Kenya.

Muhammed Badamosi opened the scoring for the Gambia after 10 minutes but Ryan Henriette drew Seychelles level four minutes later with the scores remaining 1-1 at halftime.

The Scorpions, however, turned on the style after the break to score four goals.

Musa Barrow’s penalty put the Gambia 2-1 ahead after 52 minutes before Yankuba Minteh made it 3-1 three minutes later. Badamosi returned with another goal for 4-1 and Adama Sidibeh completed the rout 12 minutes from time.

“There is still a lot to work on, this is that start of a journey. We were asking the team to work a lot higher up the field than we were before but it will take a little getting used to. It does not happen overnight,” McKinstry said after the game.

“They have been very used to playing quite direct counterattacking football and the game is simple when you play that way because the ball is played over the top and someone runs behind but now, we are trying to be on the ball a little bit more. The players have options around them than they have had for a few years.”

It is a major boost for the Gambia who now have three points from as many games, just one behind both Kenya and Burundi, who played to a 1-1 draw on Friday.

Ivory Coast lead Group F with nine points while Gabon have six ahead of matchday four which will be played on Tuesday.

The Gambia have a major test against Gabon on Tuesday on a day when Kenya will be facing group favourites Ivory Coast.
