Kamau has taken the reigns as new Mathare United head coach, replacing former Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi, who has been linked with a move to Tanzanian outfit Tabora United.

Mathare United, the 2008 Kenyan Premier League champions, have made a significant move by reappointing John Kamau as their head coach.

This decision comes as the club gears up for the new season, following their recent promotion back to the top tier of Kenyan football.

Kamau, who has been nicknamed 'Guardiola' for prefering and implimenting a style of play reminiscent of the legendary Manchester City head coach, returns to the helm at a crucial time. He takes over from former Harambee Stars coach Francis Kimanzi, who has been heavily linked with a move to Tanzanian Premier League side Tabora United.

The club confirmed the appointment through their social media channels, expressing confidence in Kamau’s ability to steer the team to greater heights.

"Mathare United is pleased to confirm that John Kamau has rejoined the club as head coach," the club announced, signaling a fresh start under his leadership.

Kamau brings a wealth of experience, having most recently been attached to Posta Rangers. His return to Mathare is seen as a strategic move, given his familiarity with the club’s culture and expectations.

Alongside him, Mohammed Ahmed Mchulla has been appointed as the assistant coach. Mchulla, who has experience working with Wazito during their stint in the top flight, is expected to play a key role in the club’s technical unit.

"Joining Kamau as part of our new-look technical unit are Mchulla, Onyango, and Oriko. Mchulla served as an assistant coach with Mombasa Stars while Onyango stepped up from the team last season," the club stated, unveiling a team that blends experience with fresh perspectives.

Dismas Onyango and Ambrose Oriko have also been named as the trainer and physiotherapist, respectively, rounding out the club’s technical staff.

Mathare United's return to the top tier comes after a strong performance in the National Super League, where they finished second behind Mara Sugar.

This promotion marks a comeback for the Slum Boys, who were relegated last year alongside Vihiga Bullets after a disappointing season that saw them finish second from the bottom.

As they prepare for the new campaign, Mathare United will face a stern test in their opening match against the twelve-time league champions AFC Leopards on August 24 at Dandora Stadium.

The match promises to be a challenging start for Kamau and his team, but with the new technical unit in place, there is a renewed sense of optimism around the club.

Kamau’s return is seen as a key factor in Mathare’s efforts to establish themselves in the top flight once again, and the club’s supporters will be watching closely as he leads the Slum Boys into the new season.
