Kenyan defender steps up as captain, but Singida falls short in Community Shield playoff.

Kenya international Joash Onyango took on the captain's armband for his new team, Singida Fountain Gate FC, in a high-stakes showdown where they lost 2-0 to Azam FC during the Tanzania Community Shield playoff match.

The match unfolded at the vibrant Mkwakwani Stadium in Tanga on a balmy Sunday evening, where fans gathered with palpable excitement.

Despite Onyango's absence in the Community Shield opener against his former club Simba, where Singida endured a heartbreaking loss on penalties, he was determined to make his presence felt this time around.

The stalwart defender played the full 90 minutes, showcasing his unwavering commitment to his new colors.

The encounter kicked off with a twist that no one could have predicted - a whirlwind start that would set the tone for the rest of the match.

In the opening minute, Onyango found himself unexpectedly contributing to Azam's first goal.

A seemingly routine back pass to Singida's goalkeeper, Beno Kakolanya, turned into an unfortunate mishap.

Kakolanya's attempt to clear the ball resulted in a fortuitous interception by Azam's sharpshooter, Prince Dube, who wasted no time in slotting the ball into the back of the net. An unexpected turn of events that set the tempo for the remainder of the game.

Azam did not stop at just one, as they continued to apply pressure on Singida's backline. In the 42nd minute, the vulnerability of Singida's defense was exposed once again.

Abdul Sopu seized the opportunity and capitalized on the disarray within Singida's ranks, doubling Azam's lead with a skillful finish.

The Singida defenders found themselves unable to thwart the concerted efforts of Azam's attackers, leaving the scoreline at 2-0.

The second half showcased a marked improvement in Singida's performance, as they fought to claw their way back into the match.

Meddie Kagere, the former Gor Mahia striker, emerged as a potent threat in the opponent's half.

In the 70th and 86th minutes, Kagere had two golden opportunities to alter the narrative of the match, but the stars did not align in his favor.

Despite his best efforts, the elusive goal continued to evade him.

Duke Abuya, another Kenyan talent donning the Singida jersey, displayed his mettle on the field as well.

The former Kenya Police FC midfielder showcased his versatility and commitment, contributing to the team's collective effort in his second appearance.

As the final whistle echoed through the stadium, the scoreline remained unaltered, favoring Azam FC at 2-0.

While the loss might have been disappointing for Singida Fountain Gate FC, the match exhibited their resilience and determination, especially in the second half where they pushed back against Azam's dominance.

Joash Onyango's captaincy marked a significant chapter in his journey with Singida Fountain Gate FC.

Despite the unexpected misstep that led to Azam's opener, Onyango's leadership on the field was undeniable.
