Kenyan striker Jesse Were is looking for a new club after leaving Zambian side Zesco United who he has enjoyed great success with during two stints.

Kenyan striker Jesse Were has left Zambian side Zesco United, having joined the club for a second stint in January this year.

Were was among the players released by the Zambian giants on Monday following the expiry of their deals with some of them not reaching an agreement over new contracts.

“I wish to inform our supporters and stakeholders that Kelvin Kapumbu, Lazarous Kambole, Nathan Sinkala, Kezironi Kizito, Jesse Were, Samuel Adeyemi, Mwenya Chibwe, Francis Elimbi, Mpho Mathekgane have left the club following the expiration of their contracts. The club has also separated mutually with Collins Sikombe,” said Zesco CEO Charles Kalala.

“We tabled improved offers to some of the players that have left the team unfortunately that could not persuade them to stay. We have already started scouting for replacements in these departments. The club will soon be making announcements of the new signings in the coming days.”

It brings to an end yet another chapter for Were and Zesco after a hugely successful first stint at the club.

The Kenyan striker joined Zesco in 2016 having been the top scorer in the Kenyan Premier League, after bagging 22 goals for Tusker FC, and went on to enjoy cult status as he became the first player to score over 100 goals for the Zambian giants.

He won four league titles as well as two ABSA Cup Championships before departing for rivals Kansanshi Dynamos in January 2022.

He was, however, back at Zesco again at the start of 2024 to continue his love affair with the club but he will now have to find a new home.

Were made his name in Zambia and it will not be a surprise if another team in the country snaps him up but he will not be short of suitors from the continent if he opts to try out a new league.
