The game started disastrously for the Africans, who promised to give their all before the game, as Japan's Maika Hamano opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, giving the Asian giants a well-deserved lead.

Just 10 minutes later, Mina Tanaka doubled Japan's advantage, leaving the Super Falcons, who needed a victory to stand any chance in the competition, reeling.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged when PSG's new star, Jennifer Echegini, pulled one back for Nigeria with a stunning strike in the 42nd minute, halving the deficit.

But the reprieve was short-lived, as Japan's Kitagawa restored their two-goal cushion in the dying moments of the first half with a world-class free-kick, leaving the Super Falcons shattered.
