FKFPL Jacob Osano reveals reason for last season's struggles after joining Sofapaka

Osano has had to endure a tough year, struggling for form back at City Stars after losing his place to Steve Njunge.

Jacob Osano has revealed why he is relishing the chance to relaunch his career at Sofapaka, having joined from Nairobi City Stars.

The custodian had established himself as one of the Premier League’s best keepers in the voided 2021/2022 season as City Stars finished the league in fifth place, which was enough to attract the interest of Ethiopian Premier League side, Ethiopian Coffee in 2022.

However, the move did not materialise, which left him with no choice but to return to City Stars, but his form took a dramatic upturn, which left him relinquishing his slot to Steve Njunge.

Although he played a part in helping the side avoid relegation, he was susceptible to making mistakes, which made him a shadow of the player who had attracted the interest of the Ethiopian club.

“It was a done deal when I went to Ethiopian Coffee. However, a slight issue emerged and they signed someone else ahead of me. There were many players signed, so they could not find a slot for a foreign player,” Osano told Pulse Sports.

“It (the failed move) affected me, which is why I did not play, but things turned around and I started playing. We started playing hard, every game was difficult but after that, we managed to get out of the relegation places. Every game made me happy because it produced unique challenges.

“I am looking forward to doing a good job here at Sofapaka. At City Stars, it is not that someone else took my position, it was just after leaving Ethiopia, I stayed (what felt like) nine matches without playing.”

Osano is itching to get back to his best in a Sofapaka shirt in order to help them achieve their objectives.

“I played my first game of last season ironically against Sofapaka, so every game was like a final, and it was giving me a lot of motivation because we had to win every match.”

Osano is set to face stiff competition from Simon Masaka, who was part of the Harambee Stars set up for the Mauritius Four Nations Tournament in June, but having faced competition from Steve Njunge at City Stars, it is nothing new to him.

The custodian believes it will foster a competitive environment that will help the club progress.

“As a player, I relish having challenges and competitions because you stand a chance of progressing easier, so I am looking forward to the competition ahead.”

Sofapaka are set to play their first match of the season against Bandari on Saturday 26 August.
