Jacob Onyango has reflected on his crucial contribution to Sofapaka’s fight to retain their topflight status after his goal brought them closer to retaining their place in the league for next season.
Onyango, who joined Sofapaka in 2021 after playing for St Anthony’s Boys, scored the decisive goal that secured an important victory in a critical playoff match.
Onyango was substituted in during the second half, replacing the injured Darius Msagha. He made an immediate impact, pressing the Naivas backline and eventually scoring the winning goal.

Ezekiel Akwana has explained the tactics he will deploy to win their clash against Naivas next week having won the first leg 1-0 on Saturday.
"This was a crucial game, and I was determined to help the team when called upon,” Onyango told Pulse Sports. “It's a playoff, and in such matches, every goal is important. I am just glad that I scored the goal that gave my team the win. I hope we will emerge victorious even in the second leg.”
Reflecting on the season, Onyango expressed confidence in Sofapaka’s ability to maintain their league status despite the challenging campaign.
“As a team that is in the league, we cannot lose the grip of our topflight status. It is very important for us as players because we need to help the team stay up,” he said.
Onyango acknowledged the difficulties the team faced, including missed opportunities that led to draws instead of wins.

Onyango first gained prominence during the 2018 Africa Copa Coca Cola U16 Championship in Nakuru, where he was the top scorer with six goals, leading his team to the African title.
He continued his impressive form by winning the U19 national title in 2019 with St Anthony’s Boys, defeating Dagoretti High School in Kisumu before the COVID-19 pandemic struck. Known for his aerial prowess, speed, and strong shots, Onyango’s physical strength makes him a formidable challenge for defenders.
