In part two of Jackline Juma's story, discover her inspiring rise to leadership and the challenges she overcame.

On a continent where football is a way of life, Jackline Juma’s rise to coaching prominence is a story of persistence and passion.

The 38-year-old gaffer's appointment as head coach of FC Talanta in the FKF Premier League was not just a professional milestone; it was a cultural breakthrough in a sport traditionally dominated by men.

Juma’s coaching story began with a bold step when she was contacted by FC Talanta’s CEO.

"He asked for my credentials and told me they wanted to bring me in as part of the men's bench and also oversee the ladies’ team," she recalls.

“Other fans see that it’s insane,” Juma admits, acknowledging the skepticism she faced. But rather than being deterred, she found motivation in proving her critics wrong and paving the way for others.

Her introduction to football came early, fueled by an irrepressible love for the game.

Growing up, Juma defied societal norms by playing football with her brothers.

“At the start, my parents were against it because they thought it was a boys’ game,” she says.

Sneaking out to play and returning home, she gradually earned their support. By 16 or 17, she was playing for Kenya’s national team, becoming one of the youngest players to represent her country.

Juma’s resilience extended beyond the pitch.

Her association with the Mathare Youth Sports Association (MYSA) provided her with a scholarship and an avenue to develop as a player and a person.

MYSA’s holistic approach to youth development included projects like HIV/AIDS awareness and leadership training.

These early experiences shaped Juma into a coach who values the role of football in personal and community growth.

As Juma recounts her journey, she emphasizes the importance of having a vision beyond immediate results.

“We wanted a coach not only for immediate results but who can grow with our players,” said James Theuri, FC Talanta’s vice chairman.

Juma fit the bill perfectly, bringing a passion for developing young athletes and a deep understanding of the game.

Juma’s first win with FC Talanta—a 1-0 victory over Sofapaka—proved her tactical abilities and solidified her credibility.

Her leadership style, grounded in teamwork and fairness, has created a positive and competitive environment for her squad.

“Teamwork is the key thing, and of course fairness makes work easy for me. If you have the knowledge, then you will create a competitive space for players,” she explains.

Jackline Juma’s rise is not just a personal triumph; it’s a beacon for aspiring female coaches across Kenya.

Her success sends a powerful message that barriers, no matter how deeply rooted, can be broken.

Tomorrow, discover how Jackline Juma's passion became her fuel to overcome challenges in coaching and inspire future leaders.
