Iwobi and Bassey fail to impress after Libya nightmare as Aston Villa beat 10-man Fulham

Aston Villa secured three points away from home after defeating 10-man Fulham at the Craven Cottage.

Fulham were looking to bounce back from their disappointing result against Manchester City before the break.

Alex Iwobi and Calvin Bassey, both returning from a devastating incident in Libya, returned to the lineup for Fulham

However, they fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Unai Emery’s men at the Craven Cottage, making two losses in a row.

As it happened 

Marco Silva made one change from the Fulham side that lost 3-2 at Manchester City before the international break.

Midfielder Sasa Lukic missed out with a shoulder injury suffered while on international duty and is replaced by Emile Smith Rowe.

Aston Villa boss Unai Emery made three changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Manchester United.

The game started and Fulham got their first goal in the seventh minute of the game. Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno launched a clearance forward, which striker Raul Jimenez chased down. The Mexican forward shoulder barges Diego Carlos off the ball before blasting home.

After the restart, Aston Villa got an immediate equaliser when Morgan Rogers drove forward and had a pop from range that deflected off the leg of Calvin Bassey into the net.

The second half started and the away side looked dominant and pinned Fulham in their own half.

Just 14 minutes into the second half, Aston Villa took the lead. Ollie Watkins met the cross from a resulting cornerkick and headed the ball via the post.

Emery’s men doubled their lead shortly after their second goal when Aston Villa full-back Lucas Digne crossed in a harmless ball, which Issa Diop turned into his own net at the near post.

The game ended in a win for Aston Villa as Marco Silva's men looked disappointed after suffering a back-to-back defeat.
