The Tottenham Hotspur fullback discussed his struggles at Tottenham under Antonio Conte and Ange Postecoglou.

Harambee Stars prospect Djed Spence has opened up about the difficulties he faced when he first joined Tottenham Hotspur under former coach Antonio Conte before later struggling to also impress Ange Postecoglou.

The Tottenham full-back revealed that he expected different treatment and was hopeful of what to expect but tables turned abruptly, where he was treated with a lot of discrimination.

Antonio Conte had little faith in Djed Spence and opted to loan him to French club Rennes before he was further forced to play for Leeds United and Serie A club Genoa under the new coach.

The 24-year-old explained that when Antonio Conte left, he expected to get playing time but things never got better for him until the December of last year.

“It’s a new manager and I knew that when a new manager comes in you know that everyone is going to get a chance,” Djed Spence said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast.

“You know, he’s going to have a look at everyone. With me, I don’t think that was really the case to be fair. It’s part of the game, football is not fair.”

He added that he always spoke to one of the Assistant coaches about why he never got chances to play but that never changed anything.

He pointed out that there was a thin line between maintaining humbleness and speaking up for what he thought he deserved and that was one of the main challenges.

“I always had conversations with the assistant coach and I basically told him that I’m the one. I told him I should be playing or at least given a chance,” Djed Spence added.

“It’s a difficult one because you say like you deserve a chance to play and stuff or you want to have a chance and people can see it like, not arrogance, but you haven’t done anything to warrant to play. I mean, it’s different.”

What cost him playing time?

Djed Spence revealed that one of the costly mistakes he made while joining the club was that he had too much respect for the players and the coaches and they took advantage of him.

He noted that he never spoke up when his rights were being violated and they normalized that at te club, making him afraid to change his tune.

“I think I’ve been a victim of being quiet, being too humble you know thinking things are going to happen by not doing anything or saying anything but football is unfair,” he shared.

“That’s what happened when I first joined Tottenham, I think I gave them too much respect to the players, I was a little bit too humble.”

However, he has taken advantage of the injuries at the club to get more playing time but is still uncertain about his position at the club as he chases big dreams like playing for the England national football team.
