Toney has pleaded guilty to many of the betting-related breaches brought against him by the FA and could be handed a lengthy ban before the end of the season.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney is said to have pleaded guilty to many of the 262 betting-related charges brought against him by the FA and could be the recipient of a lengthy ban that will begin before the end of the season.
Toney admits to betting breaches
The Daily Mail reports today that Ivan Toney has admitted to breaching FA gambling rules, pleading guilty to several of the 262 charges brought against him last December.
The 26-year-old striker is said to have accepted many of the charges but is still contesting some of them. A ban lasting several months is a likely punishment for his admitted violations, as is the punishment for infractions like this.
According to the FA, betting violations could lead to financial penalties, suspension, and, in even more severe cases, a lifetime ban.
According to the precedent set by past FA punishments in cases such as former Burnley midfielder and current Bristol Rovers manager Joey Barton, who was banned for 18 months in 2017 after admitting to betting violations, the striker could be set for a long-term ban.
Toney's breaches
The big striker was charged with 232 betting violations between 2017 and 2021 in November of last year. The charges were further increased to 262, with 30 additional charges added for breaches between 2017 and 2019.
Brentford are currently ninth in the Premier League and only four points away from a place in Europe. Losing Toney to a suspension that could keep him out for the rest of the season could derail Brentford's ambitions.
Toney has scored 14 league goals for Brentford this season, only Manchester City's Erling Haaland (27) and Harry Kane (18) have outscored him.
