The Gunners boss has addressed concerns about his team receiving three red cards after eight Premier League games.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has discussed his team's disciplinary record, particularly in light of three red cards shown to his players in recent matches.

William Saliba was the latest player to receive his marching orders for the Gunners in the North London club’s 2-0 loss at Bournemouth, following Declan Rice’s sending-off against Brighton for delaying the restart and Leandro Trossard, like Rice, receiving a second yellow in the 2-2 draw with Manchester City.

The Gunners have received more red cards than anyone else in the Premier League, with Nottingham Forest and Southampton receiving two, and the Gunners must make do without their star centre-back against Liverpool next Sunday.

What Arteta said

The Arsenal boss firmly believes that these dismissals were not a result of aggression, but rather unfortunate errors in judgment. Arteta emphasised that his team strives to be competitive but he does not condone aggression.

“I think for example what happened in those three cases [the three red cards], it’s nothing to do with aggression in my opinion,” the Spaniard told the press on Monday.

“Everybody’s got their own opinion, we want to be super competitive when we are – when we show that, it’s great – and then when it doesn’t go your way, you lose and it’s part of the judgement.”

What next for Arsenal?

Arsenal return to Champions League action on Tuesday, keen to notch consecutive wins when they host Shakhtar Donetsk at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners have accrued four points from an available six after a tournament-opening draw with Atalanta and success against Paris Saint-Germain at the start of October.
