FKF PL Title Race It's make or break for Tusker in title race as leaders Gor face Talanta

Defeat to KCB would leave the brewers further behind K'Ogalo who have a slight head start.

The race for the 2022/23 FKF Premier League title is tighter than ever before, with 4 teams, Tusker, Gor Mahia, KCB and Nzoia Sugar realistically seeking to lay their hands on the coveted price at the end of the season.

Several questions that need answers from the midweek fixtures include Tusker's stamina as they challenge KCB in the first of two back-to-back fixtures and Nzoia Sugar's ability to keep pace with the league's big boys.

Robert Matano’s Tusker will be hosting Zedekiah “Zico” Otieno’s KCB at the Ruaraka Ground on Wednesday seeking to wipe off the bitter taste of losing 1-0 to Nzoia Sugar over the weekend.

The Brewers will be seeking to get back to winning ways, although Matano insists they should never have lost that game, after Jackson Macharia’s goal was disallowed deep in stoppage time after being judged to be offside.

The 13-time FKFPL champions had gone 11 league games without defeat, which had propelled them to the top of the table before ceding top spot. They are second on 54 points, 2 adrift of league leaders Gor Mahia.

They will however, face a tough test against the Bankers, who will be full of confidence after managing to snatch a draw against AFC Leopards on Sunday in a match they arguably should have won.

KCB are currently fourth in the league on 49 points, just 5 behind Tusker. A win for the side will certainly put them in a stronger position to contend for the league. Otieno insists that the league “is far from done” with every point important.

“The points there to fight for and top place is not far from reach. Gor Mahia are only 7 points ahead of us with 7 games to spare,” Otieno said.

At the Kasarani Stadium, Jonathan McKinstry’s charges will face a tough test when they host a defensively resolute FC Talanta from 3 PM today.

K’ogalo will be hoping that the pitch will not be as water-logged as it was in the win over Kenya Police last Saturday because of the current wet weather conditions across the country.

Top goalscorer, Benson Omala will seek to add to his tally of 23 goals for the season, although it will not be easy against Ken Kenyatta’s charges.

At the nearby Annex, Salim Babu’s Nzoia Sugar will be looking for their 4th consecutive win when they play John Kamau’s Posta Rangers at 3 PM.

Nzoia have been the league’s feel good factor this season, using their youthful vibrance to help mount an unexpected title challenge. They will be relying on two key players, keeper Humphrey Katasi and midfielder John Macharia to help them continue their momentum.

Macharia’s 12 goals from midfield have been key to Nzoia’s attacking play. His ability to make late runs into the box to score is commendable, on top of his ability to create chances for others.

Katasi has now kept 6 clean sheets in a row, putting him in top contention for the Premier League golden glove alongside AFC Leopards’ Lewis Opiyo and Gad Mathews. He will seek to keep another shutout against Posta who are dangerous especially from set-piece situations, as they showed this against Gor Mahia.
