‘Why not’ - Victor Osimhen tips his incredible bicycle-kick goal to win Puskas award
Victor Osimhen has backed his wonder goal against Antalyaspor to win the FIFA Puskás Award.
What Osimhen said
The 25-year-old marked his return to action after injury with an exceptional overhead kick to help Galatasaray beat the Akrepler 3-0.
The Nigerian last played for the Cim-Bom before the international break, when he scored twice against Kasimpasa. He missed international duty for the Super Eagles due to the injury, and upon his return to action for Buruk’s side, he came off the bench to score a goal-of-the-season contender.
“I dedicate the goal I scored to my coach [Okan Buruk]," Osimhen said, per Nexus Sports. Today was his birthday. I scored a goal that could be a candidate for the Puskas Award. Maybe it could be the first; why not?
What Buruk said
Like the thousands of fans watching at the Antalya stadium yesterday and the millions more that watched the clip of the goal on social media, Galatasaray's boss, the birthday boy, was amazed by the goal.
He believes the traction such an effort would garner was good for the Super Lig, as it displays the quality on offer in Turkey.
“Osimhen is the same way. We used him for a short time. He has one goal that didn’t count and one that counted. I would have been very upset if it didn’t count,” Buruk said.
“It’s a very nice goal. It’s a goal that will make a splash in Europe and show our league. We need to show the quality of the Turkish league. In this sense, it’s an important goal.”
