Former Nigerian international Sam Elijah has questioned national team coach Eric Chelle's decision to leave striker Taiwo Awoniyi out of the provisional squad for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe.
A 39-man squad was announced by Chelle on Tuesday for the upcoming matches in Kigali and Uyo.
The squad includes notable players such as Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, Ahmed Musa, Ademola Lookman, and Umar Sadiq.
However, the decision to exclude Awoniyi from the squad was met with widespread surprise and disappointment from Elijah.

Elijah not pleased with Awoniyi’s omission
Elijah voiced his disappointment to allnigeriasoccer.com, highlighting Awoniyi's consistent commitment to the national team and his valuable contributions whenever given the chance to play.
He said, "It is not justified. Sincerely, to exclude Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been part of the team for a very long time.
)
"He didn't have the chance to express himself, unfortunately, he was ruled out due to injuries. But when he was invited to play for his country, he made his mark.
“And how can you call up thirty-nine players without Taiwo Awoniyi, who has been part of the team for a long time—to me it is unfair."

Despite this, Elijah supported the decision to bring back veteran forward Ahmed Musa, highlighting the value of his leadership and experience.
"Well, I think, in my own opinion, inviting Ahmed Musa back to the national team is a good one.
"Ahmed Musa has been a very great motivator to the team and he is a very highly experienced and disciplined player.
"For the new gaffer to call him, he must have seen something in him. Although Ahmed Musa might not be playing in Europe again, but he is playing in one of the top club sides in Nigeria.
"In Nigeria, he has made a lot of impact. He has scored many goals and also influenced the team (Kano Pillars). It is a good moment for him, he can bring his experience to play in the matches and to also motivate others," he concluded.
