Switzerland shocked Italy to progress to the quarter-final of Euro 2024.

In a stunning upset at the Round of 16 stage of Euro 2024, reigning European champions Italy were eliminated by a superb Switzerland side, who claimed a convincing 2-0 victory to secure their spot in the quarter-finals for the second consecutive edition of the tournament.

Switzerland entered the match with memories of their historic triumph over then-world champions France at the same stage in 2021, and they displayed confidence from the outset.

Despite dominating possession early on, they initially struggled to convert their control into clear scoring opportunities. It wasn't until Breel Embolo forced Gianluigi Donnarumma into action with a sharp save just before the 25th minute that Switzerland began to threaten in earnest.

Italy's response was limited to Federico Chiesa's blocked shot, highlighting their subdued first-half performance.

As the temperature rose at the Olympiastadion, Switzerland intensified their offensive efforts. Fabian Schar and Ricardo Rodriguez tested Donnarumma, laying the groundwork for Remo Freuler to break the deadlock.

Freuler received a pass from Ruben Vargas inside the box, expertly flicked the ball up, and volleyed past Donnarumma to give Switzerland a deserved lead.

Italy's hopes of a comeback were dashed shortly after the restart when Ruben Vargas unleashed a stunning curled shot from the edge of the area, leaving Donnarumma helpless as the ball nestled into the top corner.

Despite being outplayed for much of the match, Italy sought a lifeline as Gianluca Scamacca's effort struck the post, but Switzerland's defense, marshaled by Akanji and Schär, held firm.

The result marked Switzerland's first victory over Italy in nine encounters and only their second since hosting the 1954 World Cup.

Conversely, Italy's lackluster performance under manager Luciano Spalletti raised serious questions about their future in the tournament.

Switzerland, buoyed by their resplendent display, now await either England or Slovakia in the quarter-finals, poised to continue their impressive campaign under Murat Yakin.

As Switzerland celebrates another milestone in their European journey, Italy faces a period of reflection and potential restructuring following their disappointing exit from Euro 2024.
