Inter Miami hire Mascherano

The Miami-based side shone in regular season, racking up the most points in the division to win the Supporters Shield.

However, when it mattered the most, the playoffs to win the MLS Cup, they faltered, crashing out in the first round after a defeat to Atlanta United.

Subsequently, head coach Tata Martino took the role and Javier Mascherano, whose only coaching experience is with the Argentine youth set-up, was handed the job.

What Mascherano said

Mascherano is the latest to join the Barcelona reunion at Inter Miami. He was a teammate of Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba, and Luis Suarez at the Catalan club, and he had a personal relationship with them, especially Messi, who is his compatriot.

The cliche answer could have been to say he would keep things professional with them despite being their boss now, but Mascherano ensured to stress that he would maintain his friendship with them.

"I told them that I’m not going to walk into the dressing room and act like we’re not friends,” he told reporters in his first press conference.

“I told Jorge (Mas), I told Leo and the other guys, that I’m not going to jeopardise the relationship that I have built with them over the years for a job. I’m not like that. Life goes on beyond football."
