Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the goal that keeps Everton in the Premier League, but dismisses the hero tag.

Despite scoring the goal that confirmed Everton's place in the Premier League next season, Mali international Abdoulaye Doucoure claims he is not a hero.

The midfielder scored the only goal in the Toffees' 1-0 win over Bournemouth, which ensured Everton's survival despite Leicester City's win against West Ham.

The first-half against the Cherries was a frustrating affair for the Goodison crowd, as Leicester City were winning their own match and their own team could not break down Bournemouth.

However, Doucoure stepped up in the second half, beating the seemingly unassailable Mark Travers. The goal was enough to win the match for the hosts, as they held on for the most significant three points of their season.

What Doucoure said

The French-Malian says they are not getting carried away, as they understand Everton should not be in the relegation dogfight.

For this reason, he believes he is not a hero but says the team have to be better next season to enable them finish high on the log next term.

Don't get carried away. I'm not a hero. Nobody is here," he said, per the BBC.

“We work and play for Everton football club. We have to be much better than that. We need to realise the mistakes we made this season. Everyone showed passion at the end, but next season we need to come back stronger and put Everton high up."
