The 34-year-old has played for 11 clubs so far and is at the tail end of his glittering career

Mario Balotelli is reportedly closing in on a sensational return to Serie A in a bid to revitalise his career after spending the last four months as a free agent.

The former Manchester City player left Turkish Super Lig outfit Adana Demirspor at the end of last season and has been clubless. Already at the tail end of his career, Balotelli scored seven goals in 16 matches for Adana.

Struggling Serie A side Genoa are closing in on a deal for the 34-year-old in a bid to improve their goal-scoring fortunes. Genoa have managed just seven goals in eight matches and are winless in their last five encounters.

The former Liverpool striker is 'very excited' to return to the Italian league according to the Daily Mail. Balotelli claimed that he would 'smash' a potential return to Serie A. Discussing his career on streamer Enerix's Twitch channel, Balotelli grew incensed when he was compared to footballers plying their trade in Serie A.

When Enerix argued that Joel Pohjanpalo - who currently plays for Venezia - was a more sensible pick for a newly promoted side than Balotelli, the former Inter Milan star queried: "What the f*** are you saying? 'Just because I wasn't in Serie A (in recent years), what I did doesn't count? F*** off, you and Serie A.'It's a promise, I'll smash Serie A when I sign (for a new club), I'll smash this f****** Serie A."

Balotelli last played in the Serie A in the 2019-20 season when he signed for hometown team Brescia. Should the Genoa deal materialise, it will be Balotelli's 12th club after starting his professional club career in 2005 at Lumezzane.

He joined Inter Milan in 2007, winning the treble in 2010 before signing for Manchester City the same year. He moved back to Italy in January 2013, signing for Inter's rival club, AC Milan, before returning to the Premier League with Liverpool 18 months later.

Following a return to Milan on loan, Balotelli departed to France, playing for Nice and Marseille in Ligue 1. He returned to Italy a third time, joining Serie A club Brescia in summer 2019, and Serie B club Monza in late 2020 before signing for Turkish side the following summer.
