The goalkeeper said his side have not lost hope and still banging on the door for continental football next season.

Kenyan international goalkeeper Ian Otieno insists Zesco United remains alive in the chase of a top-two finish and a CAF spot this season despite the wave of inconsistency that has defined their campaign up to date.

Sitting at eighth place, Zesco are 13 points behind runaway leaders Power Dynamos and outside the CAF spots that are currently occupied by Green Buffaloes and Napsa Stars.

The Team Ya Ziko lost their recent game against the Soldiers 2-1, which became the tenth of the 30 matches played this season, raising questions about being worthy challengers.

“It was unfortunate to lose to the Green Buffaloes, but in football, these things happen. That loss hasn’t destabilized us in any way. We know if we win the last few games, we can play continental football. That is our focus," he said.

"We are taking each game as a cup final. As a team we have our objectives and if you look at the table, nothing is conclusive especially for teams fighting for second position. There is a chance that other teams will lose matches.”

Zesco United host relegation-threatened  Chambishi in their next league match at Nkana Stadium in Kitwe, and Otieno hopes they will get maximum points.

“Chambishi maybe fighting relegation but we know what they are capable of. We need to win that game to enhance our chances of playing continental football. It has been a tough season for everyone who is part of the team,” added Otieno.

When you perform poorly, no one wants to be associated with you. We will do better next season because we have a solid squad which has started taking shape.”
