The Harambee Stars goalkeeper will play a vital role since Zesco must win the Ndola derby if they have to seal a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Harambee Stars goalkeeper Ian Otieno is hoping to end the season on a high by securing third place in the Zambian Super League when his Zesco United face Forest Rangers on Saturday.

The Ndola Derby is a must-win for Zesco if they have to clinch a podium place, with fourth-placed Green Buffalos level on 52 points with them, while NAPSA Stars and Green Eagles, have 50 points each, heading into the final game of the season.

With the fixture growing in stature down the years, fireworks are still expected with a third-place finish sealing a place in the CAF Confederation Cup next season for Zesco.

“We are taking this game seriously just like we expect them to do. Zesco United players understand the importance of winning this game,” Otieno told the club’s website, ahead of the fixture set to be held at Dola Hill stadium, Ndola.

“Our momentum has changed despite this being more of a formality because we want to make sure that we finish on a high. Everyone is motivated because this is one of the biggest games of the season.”

It will not be easy, however, given Rangers are high on confidence having secured the Absa Cup following victory over MUZA FC last weekend.

“I am very sure they will want to finish on a high after emerging champions of Absa. Their fans, just like ours, will turn up in numbers to support both teams,” Otieno added.

“However, this is a fixture that we are prepared for. We have bonded as a team and know exactly what we need to do on Saturday and next season.”

Otieno has been a mainstay between the sticks for Zesco since joining the Ndola giants in January 2020 from league rivals Red Arrows.

The Kenyan international will hope to sign off the season with a good performance to perhaps catch the eye of Harambee Stars coach Engin Firat’s who named him in his 30-man provisional squad for the four Nations Tournament, scheduled to be held in Mauritius from June 11-18.
