The Super Falcons are in Leon, Mexico for a week, as part of preparations for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
Ahead of Nigeria's Revelation Cup opener against Mexico, Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum has said that his squad could now begin working on new strategies for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, however adding that he wished they could face European teams.
Nigeria, will, between February 15 and February 21, be one of four teams alongside Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica to compete at the Revelation Cup, an invitational organised by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF).
The competition will for the Super Falcons, serve as a part of preparations ahead of July's Women's World Cup in Australia/New Zealand.
Waldrum excited about Revelation Cup
Speaking ahead of Nigeria's match on Wednesday, the 66-year-old American stated that in addition to winning, the Super Falcons were at the four-nation tournament to get better.
"I think this tournament will be good preparation for us ahead of the World Cup," Waldrum said. "In the last five games, we've played USA twice, Canada twice, and Japan; those are five very difficult games.
"It's important that our team is winning', and being successful in the things we're trying to do.
"I think these (the Revelation Cup) are games that hopefully, we can do some of the things we've been working on, and some of the things we're trying to prepare for, for the World Cup."
I would have liked European teams, Waldrum says
The Women's World Cup in July will see Nigeria take on co-hosts Australia, Olympic champions Canada, and debutants Republic of Ireland, having been drawn into Group B of the tournament.
Although praising the Super Falcons' participation in the Revelation Cup, Waldrum lamented the absence of European teams.
"In some ways, I would have liked to play some European teams because our group has Canada, Ireland, and Australia, which play a completely different style from what Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica would," he said.
"Having said that, I think these matches will allow us to gain some success in some other areas that we need. We definitely need these 10 days of preparation."
The Revelation Cup will see all four participating teams take on themselves in a round-robin format between Wednesday, February 15 to Tuesday, February 21 with Costa Rica and Colombia opening festivities.
Nigeria plays Mexico by 11 pm (Nigerian time), on Wednesday.
